Audre Lorde’s Year in Italy / L’ anno di Audre Lorde in Italia

Audre Lorde has been known and discussed for a long time in Italy, but her work was previously never officially translated into Italian. It was only accessible in English, or in some partial and unofficial Italian translation that wasn’t fully accurate.

In 2001 and 2002, I was asked to give courses on Lesbian Literature at the Circolo Maurice, a lgbt organization based in Turin. On this occasion, Lorde’s work elicited a great interest and response. In the two books that we published from that experience, one on Lesbian Literature and the other on women as rebels and transgressors in literature; I wrote chapters on Lorde examining her bio-mythographic work Zami and her political essays. It was this point that I became increasingly convinced that it was necessary to translate Lorde into Italian. This was critical because it would enable a wider Italian readership to learn about the Black feminist lesbian writer, warrior poet and great intellectual thinker who has many things to say to us. Her words on the richness of difference, on courage, and learning from pain and rage, are of great value and transcend the time and situation in which they were written.

The project of publishing Lorde’s work was conceived with the women of Circolo Maurice and Francesca Polo, owner of the lesbian and gay press Il Dito e la Luna, based in Milan. In 2012, Dagmar Schultz’s documentary ‘Audre Lorde. The Berlin Years (1984-1992)’ was screened at the Torino (Turin) GLBT Film Festival. Through her, thanks to her prompt kindness, were able to get in touch with the owners of the royalties to Lorde’s writings, and could secure the rights to her political essays included in ‘The Cancer Journals’, ‘Sister Outsider’ and ‘A Burst of Light’. The book will be titled ‘Sorella Outsider,’ and it is currently being translated by  myself and my co-translator Marta Gianello Guida, a young social worker who wrote a post-graduate dissertation on Lorde.

Since this is a totally self-funded publication, we launched a crowd sourcing fundraiser to pre-sell the book. We also partnered with a number of feminist and lgbt groups and associations in many cities across Italy to organize fundraising events events. Sometimes, we include screenings of Schultz’ award-winning film at these gatherings. We are excited about the interest that we raised, and the results we are receiving. The book will be published and available for purchase in May 2014. We were recently informed that another Italian publisher is translating ‘Zami.’ We hope that Audre Lorde’s 80th birthday anniversary year will also be her year in Italy.

Margherita Giacobino was born, raised and currently lives in Turin, Italy. She is a writer and translator. She has written several novels (Un’americana a Parigi, 1993, Casalinghe all’inferno, 1996, L’educazione sentimentale di C.B. 2008, L’uovo fuori dal cavagno, 2010 and others), short stories and essays on women’s and lesbian literature. Hired by mainstream publishers, she has translated Flaubert, Emily Brontë, Margaret Atwood and other English speaking writers into Italian. In partnership with Il Dito e La Luna, a small lgbt press based in Milan, she has introduced the work of writers and scholars including Dorothy Allison, Lillian Faderman, Monique Wittig, Emma Donaghue, Rebecca Brown, Leslie Feinberg in Italy. She has held lessons and workshops on women’s literature, lesbian literature and creative writing.  She is currently working, with Marta Gianello Guida, on the translation of Audre Lorde’s essays. The volume, titled SORELLA OUTSIDER will include all Lorde’s essays and will appear on May 2014.

L’ anno di Audre Lorde in Italia – I saggi tradotti da Margherita Giacobino

Di Audre Lorde si parla in Italia da molto tempo, ma il suo lavoro non era mai stato tradotto in italiano e finora quindi era accessibile soltanto in inglese, o in alcune traduzioni parziali e non ufficiali che hanno avuto una diffusione limitata.

Nel 2001 e 2002 mi è stato chiesto di tenere dei corsi di letteratura lesbica al Circolo Maurice, un’associazione lgbt di Torino. In quell’occasione, il lavoro di Lorde ha suscitato un grande interesse e una forte risposta. Nei due libri che hanno fatto seguito a quell’esperienza, uno sulla letteratura lesbica e l’altro sulle figure di donne ribelli e trasgressive in letteratura, ho dedicato dei capitoli a Lorde, in cui si parlava della sua autobiografia ‘Zami’ e dei suoi saggi politici.

Mi sono sempre più convinta che fosse necessario tradurre Lorde in italiano, per permettere a una più vasta cerchia di lettori la conoscenza di un’autrice, poeta e pensatrice che ha molte cose da dirci. Le sue parole sulla differenza come ricchezza, sul coraggio e sull’imparare dal dolore e dalla rabbia hanno un grande valore e trascendono l’epoca e la situazione in cui sono state scritte.

Il progetto di pubblicare l’opera di Lorde è nato con le donne del Circolo Maurice e con Francesca Polo, titolare della casa editrice lgbt Il Dito e La Luna di Milano.

Nel 2012 il documentario di Dagmar Schultz ‘Audre Lorde. The Berlin Years (1984-1992)’ è stato presentato al glbt film festival di Torino. Tramite Schultz, e grazie alla sua pronta e cordiale risposta, abbiamo contattato gli eredi di Lorde e acquistato i diritti dei saggi politici inclusi in ‘The Cancer Journals’, ‘Sister Outsider’ e ‘A Burst of Light’.

Il libro, che avrà il titolo ‘Sorella Outsider’ è attualmente in corso di traduzione da parte mia e di Marta Gianello Guida, una giovane studiosa che ha fatto la sua tesi di laurea su Lorde.

Poiché si tratta di una pubblicazione completamente auto-finanziata, abbiamo lanciato una raccolta fondi con prevendita del libro e un programma di incontri – che a volte includono anche il film di Schultz – con una serie di gruppi e associazioni femministe e lgbt in molte città.

Siamo felici dell’interesse suscitato e dei risultati che stiamo ottenendo. Il libro uscirà in maggio 2014.

Sappiamo che un altro editore sta traducendo ‘Zami’ e speriamo che il 2014 sia l’anno di Lorde in Italia.
